Hi Franz,
I don't believe that there is a hardwired region in the brain that causes these unversal experiences. There are archetypal and universal themes that populate myths and great teachings of all cultures and all times. I believe there is a world just as real as this one that is normally hidden from our normal perceptions. I can't even speculate what these worlds are but everything seems to be about a luminous presence permeating everything and all these many dimensions are reflecting this. We only see a very narrow band of the light spectrum and sometimes we get a peek outside of it? I don't think one has to take drugs, but extreme states seem to be one way to part the curtains into these other dimensions. It seems that illness, intense pain whether emotional or physical, meditation, love, and so on can open the door. You mention anxiety as well. One thing seems true, you rarely hear about Mr. and Mrs. EverythingIsJustSoNice having major transformational experiences.

Our brain certainly produces strange chemicals and creates nightmares and other visions, but there's something more going on than science, at least as we puny humans can grasp it, can explain. I don't understand it but I know that there are guides that help us on this journey, call them angels, plant and animal spirits, saints, and on and on. I don't always feel this to be true, but I know it is. So if you're interested in all this, forget the hallucinogens and just go for the real thing.
