although it gave me plenty of energy, effexor actually decreased my ability to focus. a lot of other posters felt the same.

you might try strattera when it's out next month. It is a NARI and will be an alternative to the stimulants. For depressives like us though, it will most likely be a gread add-on for AD efficacy as well as issues with focus.

Secondly, look for Cymbalta (duloxetine)coming out early next year to be a better version of an SNRI like effexor. most likely, it will be a 'cleaner' AD than effexor and probably be better for attentional issues as well (in at least not causing a further lack thereof).
