I believe that Abilify's actions as an antagonist (blocker) at dopamine D2 receptors in the ventral tegmentum (part of the mesolimbic pathway) are responsible for its pro- anxiety effects. Because of this effect, dopamine is increased in the nucleus accumbens septum; enhancement of dopamine's effects on D2 receptors in this region causes anxiety as well.
