I've been on them all, every SSRI, SNRI, lithium, lamictal, topamax etc., Just recently, after my Mom was killed in December I went through a very difficult time, as anyone could imagine. My already very delicate balance was sent over the edge. Although I would never harm myself (bad, bad Karma), I knew it was only a matter of time before I created some disastrous event which would effectively take me out - remove me from such unbearable distress and despair. I've never been on the old-timer TCAs, so my pdoc suggested Nortriptyline, and keeping my current level of lithium. I thought 'oh yeah, right, a tricyclic, like an old dinosaur med is going to work where others have failed!' Well, guess what. It worked. Within 5 weeks a very severe depression has lifted quite miraculously. The only annoying side-effect is cotton mouth but I'll suck on Ricola's and live with it.
I have to go back east in early April to bury her 'cremains', empty out my childhood home and relive memories that I've run from all my life. And you know what? I know I can do it and am even looking forward to it. What a trip this is going to be, definitely NOT your usual same-ol' same-ol' work week - but you gotta be in a stable place to really be there for it, to take it all in. So, I thank the God who makes medicines work. An old workhorse is sometimes better than the newer ones. - Barbara
