The idea that these substances thin the blood has to be put into context; there's compelling evidence that many people suffer from hyper-coaguabilty. In fact, this "thick blood" state is seen by many as being normal. I disagree. Fish oil, for example, helps to restore the blood to a more normal state. So does vitamin E. There is no evidence that you go "beyond normal", in other words, that you will develop a bleeding disorder.
Just tell your doctor if you're going to have surgery or something. They will probably recommend a two-week washout period, so you can go back to the typical "thick blood" condition.
