I'm not certain (not sure if anyone is). It blocks sodium channels which inhibits the nmda receptor's glutamate release. I think it also has an afinity for calcium channels as well (probably also effecting the nmda recptor). It increases GABA-A levels also.

That's about all I know. It is avery energizing meds for me. Hope it works out well for you.
