The DSM definition requires that specific cause unlike most of the diagnoses you see here. No trauma, no PTSD. But I think you can see all the same symptoms in other cases. Every so often I find myself looking over the definition and matching just about everything but the cause. I think in the end, when they identify just what physical changes are caused by an intense short term trauma, they will find that the changes are almost the same as those in some people exposed to lesser chronic stresses. In the meantime it's probably an area where the expression "treat the symptoms, not the diagnosis" makes a lot of sense. If you have a lot of the symptoms of PTSD you may respond to the same treatments.
