> Ok, decided to begin the Magnesium thing. I have been on it for 5 days now. Used it at 200mg at night. No real problem there. After 3 days, decided to add another 200mg at lunch. The past two days, I have been almost in a coma with sleepiness and this afternoon, well, sorry to be graphic, but let us just say - I could go for a colonoscopy without a prep (really an awful situation) and that just can't be great on the electrolytes. Does this get better? Is 200mg per day enough for an effect or should I just forget it? I do think it's helped my muscle pain and night time sleep is better. I would like to continue - but, I don't know. Any ideas?
If you have diarrhea, then too much magnesium is in your gut for your present uptake ability to manage. I understand that you can adapt over time, but diarrhea is prime facie evidence that you're taking too much *for you*, right now. You will lose magnesium in the fluid drawn into the gut, so you're actually going backwards, with respect to magnesium in the body. Just cut the dose back to what you earlier tolerated. 200 mg is better than 0 mg. Unless you have kidney disease, your body will almost instantaneously adjust excretion, if you're absorbing too much with diet and supplement combined. There's no alternative but supplementation if you're otherwise not getting enough.
It might make a difference which form of magnesium you're using. As I understand it, magnesium oxide and magnesium sulphate are particularly prone to causing diarrhea.
