hi there. i think a wash out period is a must for any med really. for example, you stop using one med and then switch to another. you start to experience new side effects. you immediately think it's the new drug. but in many cases it the combo of the old and the new in your system. so you stop the second med and try a third and the cycle continues. it can be a needless cycle and we all know that med changes causes frustration because everytime you try a new one and it doesn't work etc. you feel like you are running out of options.

also, there have been cases where the combination of the old and the new can bring on symptoms of yet another mental disorder and sometimes doctor will want to treat that as well ... with yet another med.

IMHO, i think patients are given wrong diagnosis because of this. First you are diagnosed with depression. then it's depression with anxiety. then it's bipolar and it goes on and on and then you see a new doctor and the original diagnosis returns.
