Niacinamide is very safe... I've heard of people taking doses many times higher than the dose you're speaking of. It's surely safe to begin taking it on your own, just keeping the following points in mind:
1. Niacinamide is not to be used in patients with hepatic dysfunction, active peptic ulcer, diabetes mellitus, severe hypotension, or hyperuricemia with a history of gouty arthritis.
2. Niacinamide appears to increase the risk of myopathy when used in high doses concurrently with fluvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin or simvastatin.
3. Because niacin can cause hyperglycemia, dosage adjustment of insulin or oral antihyperglycemic therapy may be required in diabetic patients.
Also, in case you weren't aware, the entire book "Mind Boosters" is online at http://www.mind-boosters.com. :-)
