In reply to Depakote experiences re: migraine? good?, posted by bookgurl99 on August 25, 2003, at 20:06:15
I was put on Depakote in a treatment center after being off alcohol for two weeks. I started at 500 mgs at night and then up to 1,000 mgs at night. We went from that to 1,500 mgs but that was too sedating for me so I backed off to 1,000. I now take 500 mg at night and 500 mg in the day and that works out perfectly for me. I've been on Depakote 19 mos now and I don't consider it harsh. I was diagnosed Bipolar and Depressive and the Depakote has been great for me. I have a lot of energy that I believe I was trying to supress by drinking. The Depakote has really leveled me out.
I see in the lierature it is also prescribed for migraine prevention. I still get headaches from time to time so I don't know about how that works for me. As is always said here, we are all different, but I couldn't imagine a 500 mg dose, or even 1,000 being harsh. Then again, I've been on it awhile and I may be used to it. Out of the 5 med changes I've been through, Depakote has been the ole "tried and true"! Hope this helps. Good luck, Treb
