Jerry,
I'm sorry this is happening to you. I am not sure if they can force him to GO to the hospital but I *believe* that if he goes in to any hospital himself for treatment they most likely will put him on suicide watch and either restrain him or have a guard on him. I am assuming you are talking about Mental Facilities. Unless it is his final option i do not recommend a regular hosptial. I've had poor experiences with them in the past dealing with these issues and there's even a current thread above of such conditions. Such hospitals can not allow a person to leave when they have a risk of suicide because they could be held liable if anything were to happen to that patient, but also most of the time they dont' have the staff or need to deal with such cases.
Could you explain a little more of his situation? Has this happened before? Is he currently or was he previously on medication. Do you think he could be taking non perscribed drugs? Did something happen recently to cause this? Is his depression suicidal or really psychotic.I know your worried about your brother and I'm sorry he is in such pain. If he isn't willing to seek help soon you should consider informing either the local police or people close to him. If his depression is getting dangerouly psychotic, there is a need to think of other people around him that could be harmed from a result of this.
Try and see if he would be willing to goto local counsoling groups or anonymous groups. Some times when a depressed friend has gotten so bad I've even taken her to the only thing availible which was an AA meeting and it helped her just a little to be around supportive people. I would try to make sure he is not alone and has someone with him for support. I'm sorry you cannot be there yourself.
