Has anyone had head zaps coming off of Lexapro?

Posted by Simcha on September 27, 2003, at 12:09:24

OK, I have a friend (and no it's not me). He's experiencing head zaps. He discontinued Lexapro on his own. He went cold turkey after being on Lex 10mg for 6 months. During his time on Lex he was having migraines. He had never experienced migraines before this. So, he stopped the Lex and the migraines went away.

He's on WellbutrinSR 150mg per day. This has been his main med for SAD. It was working beautifully and his doc decided to experiment with Lex. I'm not sure why.

Now he's experiencing head zaps and irritability. I told him that this was probably withdrawal due to lower seratonin in his chemistry. The Wellbutrin is known to produce irritability in many people. He hasn't experienced this side effect before. So I told him that it is probably a function of stopping the Lex without tapering. The system has not had the chance to adjust gradually.

So, all of you who use Lexapro, and/or have come off of it, please let me know what your experience is and if it is like his experience.

I have told him that if it were me I would be going to my psychiatrist to get an evaluation. He's getting an appointment next week.

Personally I don't take myself off of or put myself on meds without my pdoc's knowledge. Not all of us do this.

Blessings,
Simcha
