iT'S a common myth that what used to be called manic depression meant getting really happy high and then crashing really low, back and forth, often regularly. Much more is understood after a decade of neuro-breakthroughs. There's more of a bipolar spectrum understanding and many people with bipolar have manic episodes which are comprised overexcited, energized negativity--largely anxiety, irritability and rage matched with despair, suicidal ideas and distressed, depressed type thoughts--a mixed picture, sometimes rapid cycling or rapid/rapid cycling (ultradian\\\).
It really is worth a look if you are suffering a lot. It helped me to discover just how perfectly I actually do fit the bipolar model. I have a severe case. Good luck.
