One argument states that SSRIs cause the death of neurons...excess serotonin is oxidized which inturn transforms it into a toxic compound...this compound effectively destroys some parts of the serotonergic system...Dr. Cheney believes this can happen after ten years.
The death of neurons lead to motor neuron problems...Cheney believes it is inevitable because our bodies must kill neurons which fire excesssively...
Some Jefferson scientists have noted that SSRIs turn neurons into cork-shaped entities, or shrivells them.
David Healy MD has noted that SSRIs can cause stomach bleeding.
Dr. Stuart Shipko, a noted neurologist and psychiatrist, has stated he has seen people with sexual impotence which persisted long after the offending SSRI was withdrawn. He has seen young people also have parkinsons from SSRI use. Also has noted akathisia.
These comments come from the above scientists/researchers...look up 'danger of SSRI' in google search. However, keep in mind that most MDs see SSRIs as being very safe (but they do say sometimes that the majority is usually wrong)
I don't really have a strong opinion on this issue (i used to) but I would not touch an SSRI.
