Lilly seeks to launch depression drug in summer

NEW YORK, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Monday it expects to launch its highly anticipated new depression drug Cymbalta this summer, in line with the company's recent expectations.
Cymbalta is one of a handful of new Lilly drugs expected to drive the Indianapolis company's profit higher. Company officials talked about the launch timing on a conference call in conjunction with the release of its 2004 earnings outlook.
Cymbalta works by maximizing the presence in the brain of two messenger chemicals, serotonin and norepinephrine -- the same dual mechanism employed by Wyeth's (WYE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) hot-selling Effexor XR treatment.
