When I was on 100 mgs. of Zoloft my hair was falling out & about a week after I went off of it this stopped occuring so badly. i know it can be very distressing--take it from a girl who has fine, long hair & has had a few bouts with a "loose" head of hair!! lol i try to hold on to what i DO have! I'm now on Lexapro as my SSRI instead. I have never taken Topomax, but I would assume that once it leaves your system your hair will stop falling out... In the mean time, I have a few tips:
--There is an awesome hair product you can buy in most hair salons called REDKEN Anti-Snap Leave-in treatment. I have a history of eating disorders & hair loss often accompanies them. This stuff got me through the worst of it when I was recovering. It made my hair stop breaking off and it helped restore it. It really did work, I swear by this product (and I am a hair product junkie--this is a forte of mine, lol) and would recommend it to anyone experiencing hair loss/breakage. Also, Paul mitchell makes a bodifying shampoo that has really seemed to make/fake (haha) my hair a LOT more full lately. But I would def. try to take the best possible care of your hair, treat it like you would anything fragile, & then treat it more to some deep conditioning treatments!
--Also, I like to spray on a detangler and brush all of the knots out of my hair before i get into the shower. this helps to prevent breakage from knots & weakened wet tangly hair. If you get out of the shower(after conditioning)& you cannot get a pick or wide-tooth comb through it, I would again spray a bit of detangler on it before trying to comb through. Also, I have stayed away from any color or perming. These things can damage your hair and make it fall out--even without out any fall out in the first place! also, i try to take it easy on the heat styling, and i always use a heat protectant on my hair beforehand. i know that Thermasilk makes a light leave-in cond. spray that does double duty w/detangling and heat protection. these things have truly helped me out a lot, and i really really really hope they help you too.
and remember that you can always turn to a trusted stylist for advice!
--Another thing I do is take vitamins (orally). If it works with your medicine regime, you could incorporate a vitamin in. I regularly take one called 'Skin, Hair & Nails'; it's a dietary supplement you can get in a drug store relatively cheaply.
Again, I know how distressing hair loss can be, but at least there are some things you can do to be pro-active about it. if you have any other questions, clarifications or anything feel free to ask! I hope I've helped in some small way, even if just extending some comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Best of luck & I'll be thinking of you!--L.
