Hi Michael,
I think quitting the marijuana was a good decision. It's a depressant and can definately cause anxiety in some people.
"Benzos" or Benzodiazepines is the name of a class of drugs that slow down your central nervous system and are often used to treat anxiety. Benzos have a reputation for being addictive, but some people swear by them.
Here are some meds to consider and research for anxiety: (www.drugs.com is a useful site with information about different meds)
Paxil - An SSRI for anxiety and depression. I had a difficult time on this one, but many people love it.
Klonopin (a benzo) - Some refer to this as "the gold standard" of anti-anxiety drugs. I take it as needed and it really helps me get through difficult days.
Lorazepam (a benzo) - Another anti-anxiety med. I also take this one as needed and have found that it does the trick for anxiety.
Xanax (a benzo) - This one is said to be very addictive, but also effective.
Also, check out the site I mentioned. They have consumer information for almost every drug on the market. Best of luck with your new doc and I hope you find the right med.
K.
