In reply to MIXING MAOI's and Thyroid Hormone????, posted by dreaman on February 2, 2004, at 20:13:34
Why are you not telling your doc you're on selegeline? Maybe I missed something in your note. Throid supplementation can be used safely, and wisely, with almost any antidepressants, including MAOI's, especially if you have lab indications that you may be hypothyroid to begin with. Your 6.8 TSH (was that the TSH measure or something else?) suggests a thyroid status that could benefit from thyroid supplementation. BE warned, however, there is considerable controversy among experts as to relative benefits of
T3, T4, or combinations thereof. There's also the issue of natural versus synthetic thyroid supplementation. All can be monitored for safety/efficacy by checking regularly pulse, blood pressure and heart rate. Also, followup blood tests after treatment should be done to see if the TSH level is falling.
IN short, I think it's important that you educate yourself on these matters (LOTS of stuff on the internet) and I think you should try to involve your docs in a mutual proactive approach to whatever treatment plan you want to start with. If they won't respect your informed input, then you need to find someone who will. Don't play games! Good luck. Regards, Sailor
