beating med poop-out

Hi...

I'm wondering how long one must be off a med that's "pooped-out" (lost its effectiveness) before you can try it again and get results. I'm sure it depends on the med (in my case it's a tricyclic I'm using for pain control), but I'd love to hear opinions/experiences.
