What Is The Difference Between SSRI's And MAOI's?

Posted by Lo on February 22, 2004, at 18:38:11

I'm currently taking the lowest dosage of Seroquil (25mgs) as a sleep aid. It's base chemical is called Quetiapine (sp?) and it's an antipsychotic sedative. This I know; and I'm under the impression (though I don't know for sure) that it's an SSRI.

However, I'm also taking Phentermenedrine (sp) as a diet aid and I've been informed that this is an MAOI. I was told that SSRI's and MAOI's don't mix and it could mess me up somehow.

Can someone please explain to me what the difference between SSRI's and MAOI's is and how they interact?

Cheers,
Lo
