I must say I am impressed with the knowledge and sophistication of the participants on this board. Hope you can help in this case.
First off, I am five years status post an adrenalectomy for Cushing's syndrome. Never had complete recovery. Began getting 2 PM uncontrollable sleep during day about 3 years ago. At first I was told I had sympathetic nervous system dominance from the Cushing's and needed to boost parasympathetic activation with SSRI's and/or trytophan or its relatives to help me get Stage 4 sleep at night. All of the above made me wiped out, groggy and spacey. After about six months, my doc put me on Wellbutrin, which kept me awake, and far more alert, but also irritable and too charged. I went to a psychiatrist after I tried going to work out and gained six pounds and three percent body fat in one month.
He thought my falling asleep was secondary to anxiety and then put me on Buspar. I had even worse rebound angst and more weight gain, so I stopped that.
Now I'm getting symptoms of Cushing's again and I'm on nothing. Not sleeping in the day anymore, but the central obesity and moonface are starting again.
I've had periodic very high cortisol readings prior to going on meds. I haven't been offered retesting because I had a normal response to the dexamethasone suppression test.
Is it possible that the meds threw my body off balance more and I'm going into a Pseudo Cushing's state?Now I'm leery of taking anything. Exercise worsens my symptoms, so I'm just eating 1200 calories a day lowcarb and watching myself gain more and more weight.
Any ideas?
