In reply to what the treatment for a child with ODD?, posted by rainee on March 12, 2004, at 22:44:58
Hi Rainee,
My son doesn't have ODD, but he does have OCD and BP. Doctors tend to treat ODD alot like BP I have noticed , I spoke to a few others whose children had this diagnosis. I wouldn't really say suggesting meds, because alot of times they say "ODD" is not treatable with meds and only with therapy. But the parents I know who children have ODD diagnosis, typically have their children on Mood stablizers (as used in bipolar) such as depakote, lithium, tegretol, trileptal, topamax to name a few..
They also seem to use atypical antipsychotics quite a bit for these kids, and this is probably helpful to some degree for the OCD.
There are quite a few atypical antipsychotics
but they are powerful drugs
(zyprexa,geodon,risperedal,abilify)
abilify is the newest with the lowest side effect profile, but I think there is alot of success with it and risperidal in ODD kids, and the abilify might help with some OCD as well.
Hope this is helpful!
> and Autism and OCD..the list goes on. Poor kid he take ritalin and zoloft. But his ODD is getting so bad at 11 he is about to get kicked out of school. at night and in the morning he hoots and hollers. Is there a med course for
