Yes, I had the exact same thing happen after 8 years on SSRIs. I went into a black depression for over two months (just before 9/11/01, I might add!--as if the depression wasn't bad enough!) To make matters worse, I ended up dropping out of my PhD program after spending 3 years and a ton of money. Beleive it or not, Effexor saved my life--THAT'S RIGHT, EFFEXOR!!!!!!!!!!! Don't believe all the bad news you hear about it. Not to diminish anyone's angst, but I'm willing to bet there are people who swear they're having unbearable with aspirin withdrawal.
You'll have to make your own decision, but Effexor has changed my life. Unfortunately it has the same sexual side effects (for me) as SSRIs.
