DrblondeI'm bi-polar and on Effexor XR 187.5mg daily. You're right, those diagnosed with BP shouldn't really be put on any anti-depressant, including Effexor. It can cause manic episodes. That's why I am being closely monitored and I've never had a problem and I've been taking Effexor for 3 years. That's not to say that somebody else won't have a problem. Everybody reacts differently and we all should be closely monitored by our doctors.
I can't offer any opinion about Ritalin because I don't know much about it and I have no experience with it.
