Don't be afraid to take ADs if your doctor thinks you need them. Definitely, there are side effects, but for the most part they are far preferable to serious depression. You just have to commit to working through the SEs until you find the one (or more) med that works well for you without SEs you find intolerable.
I have been through every SSRI out there, and I'm not really impressed with them. Certainly the sedation and the sexual side effects are notable in my experience. Switching over to Wellbutrin has substantially diminished those problems, but the therapeutic effect is negligible at this point (2 weeks in). But finding a med that works is important, so I'm going to give the Wellbutrin plenty of time to work before I give up on it.
Then I will move on to the next med, doing my research, talking to my doctor, and just working at it. Given the intractable problems I've experienced with BP and OCD, I really see no other way--I have problems and I'm going to see it through to the best resolution possible.
Of course, you're reading me on a good day . . .:)
Hang in there, and don't be afraid to try out options that could really help.
