Losing tolerance to benzos

Posted by jms600 on May 11, 2004, at 16:48:56

Hello,

Is is possible to lose any tolerance to benzodiazepines? I have grown quite tolerant to Valium, even though I only used it on average once or twice a fortnight.

I don't find that I'm addicted to it, just that I need to raise my dose a little higher to achieve the same anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effect.

I have noticed the same with Temazepam. I used to be able to sleep well on 10mg, but now I need at least 20-30mg before it helps me sleep - even though I don't take it every day.

My question is, is it possible to lose this tolerance so that I can take a relatively low dose of Valium, or other benzo, and get the same anti-anxiety effects as when I first started taking them seven or eight months ago?? If it is possible how long should I lay off the benzos until my tolerance to the drugs has diminished??

Thanks!
