Since you have already started on SAM-e, I think you should stay with it for a while to see how it works for you.
A Columbia University psychiatrist named Richard Brown wrote a book on SAM-e a few years a go. He said that most of his patients who take SAM-e take it along with a prescription AD.
As for dosage, I guess there can be a big variation depending on what else one is taking. If you take SAM-e by itself, the effective dose is usually 1200 to 1600 mg per day. I don't think that too many people take it that way because it's extememly expensive at that dosage.
Like all AD's, SAM-e can of course have some side effects. The one that I read about the most is jitteriness.
If I were you, I would stay at the 800 mg dose for at least another week, and then see if you want to stay there or increase it.
The book says to take it on an empty stomach and supplemented it with B12 and folate.
I tried SAM-e for a while but never really gave it a fair trial at a high enough dose because of the cost.
