I experience a lessening of Effexors effectiveness about every six months and subsequently have had to steadily increase my dosage. My dr has stated that although I have not had any negative side effects (i.e. blood pressure), this is as high as he wants to go for me and said that it may be time to move on and try something else (Celexa...great, I have to learn all about the quirks of yet another AD). I was on Zoloft for about 3 years prior to Effexor and it lost effectiveness as well.

Your doctor sounds sensible. How good was Zoloft for you? I would be inclined to try & go back to it.
