> > hello, chemist here. first off, as i have promised, i will not diclose any synthetic routes involving any illicit drugs. here is what i can offer you. pseudoephedrine is the beta-hydroxy precursor to methamphetamine, and there is no problem with chirality. ther are abotu 200 synthetic routes, and one of which i will not diclose is the safest and fastest with the most potent yield. the deal with PE is that is small does, it does what it should do: bronchodilate. however, it is sold is very high doses, and thus the iliicit manufacture. the reason is it included in OTC anti-histamines is that the anti-histamine itself will but you to sleep. the PE is there to keep you awake. as for binding affinities, d-amphetamine >> l-amphetamine >= methylphenidate >> PE. all the best, chemist

However, I would place high bets that if I were to snort a bit of cocaine, I would FALL RIGHT TO SLEEP while everyone else is bouncing off the walls and going all psychotic!!!

I understand that. Is is possible that, considering the over 200 synthetic pathways, that the liver has the ability to at least fullfil one??????? 30 mgs I took twice yesterday and by golly I was able to skip one of my 2 Ritalin doses. IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!

hello there....pseudoephedrine is metabolized by dealkylation to norpseudoephedrine, but you still have to deal with the beta-hydroxy group before you get amphetamine, and i am not aware of any substrate that performs this task, and given the pH requirements - which i will not go into here - i doubt it takes place in vivo, not even with enzymatic assistance. the best i can recall is that pseudoephedrine enhances norepinephrine release. now, you are dealing with a catecholamine that looks similar to dopamine, and i *believe* there is weak inhibition of D_{3}, but don't hold me to that. finally, the fact that you feel stimulated by taking pseudoephedrine make sense, since if you have more norepinephrine to work with, it's just a step away from epinephrine. your methylphenidate is a strange one, not a phenethylamine but a piperidine drug. i do know the major metabolite is inactive, but i am unaware of the mechanistic way in which methylphenidate poduces stimulation, but if i had to guess, probably via dopamine reuptake inhibition, similar to amphetamine. hope this helps, and please do correct me if i've slipped up (that's been known to happen!!!!!) and all the best, chemist
