> I was wondering if anyone has had an allergic reaction to Wellbutrin SR 150MG, but was able to take a different dosage. I don't recall what dosage I started out on, but think it was lower than 150MG. Once I started the 150MG, I broke out with hives (not too severe) after a few days. I really would love to go back on Wellbutrin, as I believe it was helping me out with my depression. I have zero interest in trying out any SSRI's, as I am not willing to risk gaining weight.
My understanding is that rashes and other allergic reactions to a particular drug generally disqualify the drug from being taken any further. It's barely possible that the cause here is an inert ingredient in GlaxoSmithKline's formulation that may not be present in one of the generic versions, but I wouldn't count on it.I am sympathetic as to your desire to avoid weight gain, as this is a side effect I also consider to be intolerable. Fortunately for me, most of the 10 drugs I've tried have not induced weight gain for me, and some have been powerful appetite suppressants. One that you may wish to consider is desipramine, a tricyclic AD that is a relatively powerful norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor with minimal antihistaminic and anticholinergic effects (for a tricyclic). I found this to be the most effective appetite suppressant out of the ADs I've tried, and even though I don't weigh all that much to begin with, I did lose weight on it. Of course, like all of these blasted drugs, this comes with a big YMMV.
If you were willing to put up with the dietary and OTC drug restrictions, the MAOI Parnate also has no real tendency to induce weight gain. It is very dopaminergic like Wellbutrin and is noted for its lack of sexual side effects. It is a powerful drug but perhaps a little drastic for the average person.
