My understanding about alcohol is that the brain does not completely recover from damage it might have suffered from its abuse. So if you start to drink again you pick up where you left off, damage wise. From my personal experience, I find this to be too true.

It increases depression as it is a depressive (!), and any relief I thought I would find in it is an illusion.

Being on antidepressants and drinking alcohol is a bad combination - your liver is at risk, and whenever I have tried, I get *very* drunk *very* quickly and take about three times as long to recover.
