Have you tried an alpha blocker such as Flomax, Hytrin, or doxazosin? In my case, I have hypersensitive alpha adrenergic receptors in my prostate, which cause some of the same symptoms as you suffer from; although, mine appear to be somewhat less severe. My symptoms have absolutely nothing to do with any kind of infection, and my prostate is not enlarged, either. What happens is that the net effect winds up being similar to having an enlarged prostate, as the hypersensitive receptors cause the prostate to constrict and impede urine flow.

I do believe the hypersensitivity of these receptors is related to my chronic depression, probably due to the effects of a dysregulated norepinephrine system over a period of years. The alpha adrenergic receptors in my cardiovascular system also seem to be hypersensitive, judging from the enormous drop in blood pressure I experience on tricyclic antipressants with alpha adrenergic blockades. Again, I would hypothesize that this is also a result of my long term depression.

The drug I take for my prostate problem is doxazosin, which I think goes by the brand name Cardura. I take the max dose of 8 mg/day and really suffer no side effects other than somewhat prolonged erections at times. This is a fairly common side effect of alpha blockers.
