Hi Outsider.I'm UK also. Clomipramine seems to be fairly well regarded here for depression with social phobia. It displays powerful inhibition of serotonin reuptake, thought to be important in the treatment of the latter.
I have Bipolar NOS, which essentially presents itself in me as depression + social anxiety (plus a few other nasties such as derealisation/agitation etc...).
I'm very treatment resistant - I've taken over 50 different drugs, Memantine being the latest - and so was prescribed a fairly heroic dose of 300mg daily.
Usual trycylic symptoms for me; hypotension, dry mouth etc. It didn't help, but then none of the antidepressants I've tried have (save for a couple of blissful euthymic weeks on Prozac). As with all anti-depressants, it ultimately worsened my condition. That's Bipolar for you.
Tryptophan was eventually added to improve the availability of serotonin, but I unsurprisingly developed the first signs of serotonin syndrome and had to stop sharpish.
That's my experience.
Ta,
Jah.
P.S. In my fairly considerable experience, *most* UK pdocs are hard work. I'm currently embroiled in a dispute with a major psychiatric London hospital over my treatment by their vindictive centre director. UK pdocs are extremely reluctant to push the envelope regarding treatment, even when lives are at stake - I have had to fight for my treatment despite the fact that I have been acutely suicidal since early childhood. I fly to America in a couple of weeks...
(sorry this is so long - years since I last posted)
