put on two mood stabilizers at once?

Just wondering if it is commonplace for one to be put on two different mood stabilizers at once.

I am currently on 400 mg tegretol and my gp prescribed topamax (100 mg i think...) to counteract some side effects I am having with effexor (sweating and increased appetite).

I am afraid to take the topamax .. I feel I would be overmedicated ... are my feelings justified or am I just being silly?
