In reply to Inderal the best beta-blocker for anxiety?, posted by chess on September 23, 2004, at 16:29:07

I've only just started propranalol, and it's the only beta blocker I've ever taken, but it's like a miracle for me. So far, it hasn't hit enough of a steady state to work 24/7, and I don't know if it intends to, but I've found that it's pretty much OK if I take the second dose of the day with a late lunch. That lasts me until about the time I go to sleep, and if I'm anxious while I'm asleep -- well, I don't know about it.

I take it because I get a lot of tension in my chest and diaphragm, with some tight breathing, and a feeling of needing to "run away!" -- even though I usually don't know what I want to run away from, or why. Just your basic, amorphous, general and chronic anxiety. For me, most of the symptoms are physical, rather than psychological. And, for me, benzos don't help. In fact, because I feel more vulnerable when I feel foggy, the benzos can make it worse. My pdoc recommended either a low dose of a second generation anti-psychotic or Gabitril, but I asked about trying a beta blocker instead. It's working, I love it, and I'd say it's worth a try.

Hope that helps.
