In reply to anyone taking prozac and effexor combo, posted by lexman on September 24, 2004, at 22:52:17
225mg Effexor XR and 10mg Prozac, for about three years.
For me, it did enough at the time I started it to be worth continuing -- until the breakthrough depression became the dominant feature of my life. That doesn't mean that the combination isn't a good one, it just means that it didn't continue working for me. I may, at this point, fall into the catagory of "Treatment Resistant", so keep that in mind. Also keep in mind that subsequent experiments with giving me Prozac have been fiascos. It is not a good drug for me, but the combination was prescribed by a PCP, so we went with what she had samples of on that day.
Is this something you're thinking about trying? If so, you could do something like what I did that led to this combo: I'd had reasonable luck with Paxil in the past, but the side effects were overwhelming. The Effexor, which I'd been on for a few months by that time was underwhelming, but wasn't causing any real problems, and was helping a bit. So, the doctor decided that, since it was taking rather high dosages of any AD to have any effect on me, and the high doses of SSRIs were causing problems, that the middling high dose of Effexor with a low dose SSRI to augment it was worth a try. It was, and it did enough for me.
So, if this is something you're thinking about trying, it's probably worth trying. Especially if you've had luck with SSRIs or Effexor in the past.
Good luck.
