Effexor's effects vs. MAOIs'

Posted by jclint on October 27, 2004, at 17:22:15

Good evening all. I am currently researching obsessively alternate meds to try. I am currently on 150mg of Effexor for depression/social phobia and am feeling pretty frustrated!! A couple of months back I was set on trying klonopin for my sp, not realising the stigma against such drugs in the UK. I showed some printouts of socialfear.com to my doc and told her about my interest: she responded by calling it an 'evil drug' that she would never prescribe... sigh. Seeing the section about Nardil however, she suggested I try that route. I was not interested at the time and so transferred to a more benzo-liberal doc. After many dragging weeks it looks like the most he will presribe is valium (short term), which doesn't sound too enticing.

So my new option is the old MAOIs. Too be honest I'm mad at myself for being so narrow minded when my old doc offered nardil. But hey we learn! Initially I was repelled as I thought it was just another anti-depressant rather than anti-anxiety, but now I realise the MAOIs are different. I'm struggling to imagine, however, what this means in practical terms. Anyone who has been on effexor and an MAOI, what is different about their noticable effects? Thanks very much, John :)

Better get weaning if I'm going to start...
