Alternatives to SSRIs in the UK?

Posted by elizabeth22 on November 18, 2004, at 12:30:30

Hi,

I live in the UK and was wondering if anyone there had been prescribed any non-SSRI anti-depressants. I have been on and off SSRIs for several years, and always end up stopping them because of the sexual side-effects and then sliding back into a depression and have to start taking them again. I know this is probably a familiar story.

I've never known anyone in the UK to take anything other than SSRIs and when I complained about the sexual side-effects to my doctor she just said 'Yes, sorry, they do have those side-effects but as you don't have a boyfriend at the moment, I wouldn't worry about it.' She made me feel like a nymphomaniac for even caring about my sex life...

I now (finally) have managed to get referred to a psychiatrist, and might ask him/her about trying something different, but would like to hear about other people's experiences first before I embarrass myself again!

btw I'm female, 23 and currently taking 20 mg of celexa.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Elizabeth
