buspirone and clonazepam can be safely combined. They are not really similar meds. Clonazepam works on GABA while buspirone works on the three monoamines, to varying degrees.

Advantages to buspirone: AD effects for some, no discontinuation syndrome.

Advantages to clonazepam: powerful anxiolytic.

It is noteworthy that clonazepam is approved for panic disorder, while buspirone's indication is for Generalized Anxiety Disorder, which, I would argue, is indistinguishable from milder forms of depression.
