Neuropsychiatric side effects of stimulants

Posted by ed_uk on January 14, 2005, at 17:47:57

Hello,

Breggin claims that stimulants reduce imagination, initiative, sociability, spontaneity, curiosity, novelty-seeking etc. He claims that they can cause cognitive inflexibility.

In your experience, what truth is there in any of this?

NB. Please do not think that I'm an anti-psychiatrist because I refered to Breggin. I am not.

It is known that stimulants can induce compulsive behaviour as well as stereotyped behaviour. Has anyone on p-babble suffered these effects?

From the International Journal of Risk and Safety in Medicine........

At least three children developed severe drug-induced obsessive/compulsive symptoms (one on MPH, two on AMPH), including a child who played Legos for a 36-hour period without breaking to eat or sleep and another who “became compulsive about raking leaves and did so for 7 consecutive hours, after which he still felt compelled to rake individual leaves as they fell”.

If you have tried various stimulants......

Have you found amphetamines or methylphenidate to be the most likely to induce compulsive behaviour?

In your experience, which drug is most likely to induce over-focusing?

In your experience, is methylphenidate more or less effective than the amphetamines in increasing/improving focus?

In your experience, do amphetamines and methylphenidate have different effects on sociability?

Has anyone on p-babble become paranoid after taking a stimulant? Did you recognise your symptoms as being drug-induced?

Has anyone on p-babble experienced tics, tourettism or other dyskinesias in response to treatment with methylphenidate or an amphetamine? Did these side effects dissapear when the drug was stopped?

Thank you,
Ed.
