Hello Andrew,
>we have to use Demerol.....
I am absolutely convinced that they would not need to use Demerol! Many hospitals in the UK have banned Demerol completely because it is more toxic than other opioids. I am sure that you could negotiate an alternative opioid- if indeed you needed one, which you probably wouldn't.
To be honest, Demerol has poor efficacy in the treatment of post-op dental pain. NSAIDs such as ibuprofen are generally much more effective for this type of pain. High doses of ibuprofen are generally very effective for post-op dental pain, 600-800mg ibuprofen is generally more effective than 10mg im/sc morphine. Post-op dental pain isn't usually very responsive to opioids for some reason. Ibuprofen + acetaminophen/paracetamol can be used. If an opioid is necessary, there are *many* alternative to pethidine/meperidine/Demerol.
>Well, the doc says a change to risperidone should help mitigate any huge withdrawal....he also has given me some back up clomipramine in case...he also suggested remeron........
But have you tried these drugs in the past? Do they help you?
I know you are not listening so...
GOOD LUCK ACE!!!
