You said you were diagnosed with bipolar illness. There is schizo-affective disorder which is a combination of bipolar illness and schizophrenia. I think you just have to wait and see how things develop.
I have to agree with you. If schizophrenia runs in the family, I don't know why your doctor would use the word "improbable".
I hope you get the support you need.
