The bias against methamphetamine annoys me to no end. It is almost completely unjustified.
In fact, methamphetamine indeed should be the stimulant OF CHOICE. Why? It has the greatest ratio of central to peripheral effects. That is, for ecah unit of mental stimulantion, methamphetamine produces the least peripheral (cardiovascular effects, etc) effects. In sane doses such as those used for ADD, I do not think neurotoxicity would be much of a concern, though I'd welcome any evidence to the contrary.
The reason methamphetamine is so widely abused is because it has the highest therapeutic index! If one takes 5mg methamphetamine, they are quite awake. One can then ingest 50mg of methamphetamine and still not be uncomfortable. This is why, I imagine, people who use amphetamine for reasons other than simply to get a euphoria bordering on psychosis tend to prefer d-methamphetamine--least side effects!
A dose of caffeine let's say is 100mg. If one ingests that, there is a mild stimulant effect. What happens upon ingestion of 1000mg of caffeine? I'll meet you at the hospital ... ;)
The next best choice, as someone indicated, is d-amphetamine (Dexedrine). Stay away from the l- isomers unless you find that Adderall, etc. help you more (which you didn't).
