methods, crossing over from one benzo to another

Some docs say just drop the benzo you are on on the spot and start taking the other. Maybe, if one had only been on it a ahort time... But I have been putting in 40 mgs of valium a day for two months. Any suggestions for a crossover method? (Valium to Klonopin) The Ashton Manual suggests replacing one dose a week, so if you were dosing 4 times a day, that would take a month. As usual I think she aires much on the side of caution. Any other ideas on this? Thanks!
