I have been on Adderall on and off for about three years, and it has been my best friend and worst enemy.
I've found that my developing a tolerance to it is unavoidable, even when taking fairly high doses (40-70 mg) of Namenda (aka Memantine). Namenda seems to slow down the development of tolerance and somewhat enhance the effects of Adderall, but it doesn't stop the tolerance completely.
For those beginning to take Adderall or contemplating using it, a word of advice. You may find yourself becoming an addict regardless of how good you perceive your character to be. You may find yourself spending the night in the ER because of an overdose, with a heart rate of about 200 beats/minute, as I did. And when you finally decide to get off the drug, you may experience "learned helplessness", which is basically when you lack all will power, motivation, and energy to do anything because of your psychological dependence on the drug. Bottom line: this is a very dangerous drug.
I recommend only taking it occationally, when you need to. If you find yourself having to take it every day because of an excessive work load, then you may want to consider finding a different line of work. I wish someone would have warned me about this when I was struggling through college.
