> For about 2 years now, I've been biting my tongue obsessively when I am agitated, nervous, or even doing something monotonous like reading. I wind up removing the top layer of skin cells on my tongue. It doesn't bleed, but my tongue becomes rough and uneven. The more rough it gets the more I have to do it, to try to "even it out." This is a gross and perplexing habit, and my teeth wind up aching from it. I am on Lexapro 10mg for anxiety, and had hoped that the drug would help with the behavior, but it has not. I really want to break the behavior, but it has proven to be very difficult. Any one have any advice?

When I was a child I went through repetitive behaviors similar to the one you're describing. Since I've been on antidepressants I haven't really had to worry about them, though they do come back on occasion. It might be worth trying another SSRI...Lexapro did nothing for me, though everyone is different.
