Lex + remeron for breakthrough depression?

Posted by Joslynn on June 20, 2005, at 9:39:27

Hello. I had what they call some "breakthrough depression," where it rears its ugly head suddenly even though overall you are doing well. Due to a trigger in my personal life last weekend and also stress, I had a mini-episode of depression & anxiety last week. I was still able to make it to work, but had to leave early most days, and was plagued by crying jags, early morning awakening, no appetite, and passive suicidal thoughts floating around. It came on quick and was intense.

My pdoc recommended upping from 10 mg lex to 15 mg lex to get through it. I did that, starting on Wednesday.

Then, when he saw me Friday and I was in very bad shape, he recommended that I go back on Remeron, 15 mg, at night, which I used to use as a supplment to the lex. This is a good combo for me, but the Remeron makes me very, very hungry, so I don't use it regularly.

Anyway, I started taking the Remeron again Saturday night, which was just a couple days ago.

Also, on Saturday, finally I was able to eat a real meal and the depression, anxiety got better.

Now I am here at work and feeling quite a bit better. Appetite still a bit off, feel drained and a bit down, but the suicidal thoughts are gone and the anxiety is way down. Feeling hopeful again.

My question is, do I really need to keep taking the Remeron? Could taking it just two nights in a row have contributed to feeling better, or am I just feeling better naturally, because I have talked out the trigger in therapy, started sleeping/eating again etc.

I guess what I am asking is, am I feeling better "naturally" or is it the Remeron that made me feel better?

If it wasn't the Remeron, then I don't want to keep taking it and getting hungrier/gaining weight.

But if it did help, just those two days worth, then I will take it and just work out a lot I guess.

Hmmm. Thoughts? thank you.
