I think a lot of people assume that newer drugs are better, but this is not always the case.
Sad to say the world of Psychiatry has 'fashions' just like any other part of life.
MAOIs and Trycyclics are considered old fashioned and outdated at the moment.
That doesn't mean in practise that they're inferior, just because their not on patent any more, so no one wants to push them.I've never taken an MAOI, but I have taken Clomipramine a trycyclic.
I can safely say that Clomipramine was more effective than any of the newer drugs I've tried, although it did have more side effects, theres always a trade off!Given a choice between an SSRI or a tryclic, I would go for the tryclic, if I couldn't have an MAOI!
