HELP!! Lithium toxicity due to recent surgery??

Posted by sac on June 24, 2005, at 6:51:25

Hello, I'm currently being treated with Eskalith 450 mg(low dose)and Cymbalta 60mgs. to manage Bipolar II. I had surgery 2 1/2 weeks ago which required general anesthesia. However, they told me that it should be no problem to continue to take my lithium. However, about 5 days ago, I developed a marked increase in thirst, felt lethargic and then developed a cardia arrythmia that was very disturbing to me. I finally realized yesterday that perhaps the surgery had thrown off my lithium level and maybe I was becoming toxic. I had experienced increased thirst and lethargy in the past and discontinued lithium for 2 days at Pdoc's instructions (along with hydration) and those symptoms abated. Anyone have experience with lithium and it's toxicity symptoms...are heart beat irregularities common? thanks for any info. -Stacey
